Origin and history:
The botanical name of lemon balm is "Melissa officinalis". Already in ancient times it was used by the Greeks and Romans as a medicinal plant. Her name also comes from this period: "Melissa" is Greek and means "honey bee". Even then, the strong attraction of the up to 90 cm high plant on bees was observed. Lemon balm originally comes from the Near East and came from there to the Mediterranean countries. Saint Hildegard von Bingen called it "bee's eye" and praised the plant very much.
