How does the active ingredient in the medicine work?

The active ingredient relieves the urge to cough by paralyzing the cough center in the brain. It also occupies certain binding sites in our respiratory system, preventing them from transmitting stimuli and causing us to cough constantly. The active ingredient slightly numbs the nerve cells in the bronchi and dilates the airways. Additionally, the substance relaxes the muscles in the lungs.

What are the contraindications?

Always:
- Hypersensitivity to the ingredients
- Respiratory weakness, especially in young children
- Brain diseases
- Impaired liver function

In certain circumstances - talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this:
- Cough with heavy mucus production
- Bronchial asthma
- Tendency to seizures, especially in young children
- Impaired kidney function

Which age group should be considered?
- Infants and young children under 2 years of age: This medicine must not be used.

What about pregnancy and breastfeeding?
- Pregnancy: This medicine must not be used.
- Breastfeeding: This medicine must not be used.

If you have been prescribed the medicine despite a contraindication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. The therapeutic benefit may outweigh the risk associated with use in the presence of contraindications.

What should you be aware of?
- Your ability to react may be impaired even when used as directed, especially at higher doses or in combination with alcohol. Be especially careful when driving or operating machinery (including household machinery) that could cause injury.

When the acute symptoms of a cold are over, you hope you're over it. Your runny nose dries up again, and you no longer produce mucus when coughing. Nevertheless, the coughing continues and becomes painful. It irritates the sensitive mucous membranes in the bronchi until inflammation. A vicious cycle of irritation and coughing ensues, which is exhausting during the day and, above all, prevents you from resting at night

The urge to cough originates in the airways and is actually a life-preserving reflex. It removes irritating substances from the trachea and bronchi—be it improperly swallowed food or bacteria-laden mucus that needs to be expelled from the lungs. The stimulus is processed in a very specific part of the brain, the cough center. Once the stimulus reaches a certain intensity, this part of the brain triggers the cough impulse. In the context of a cold, this happens even with the slightest stimuli. This leads to constant coughing, even though it isn't actually necessary.

SILOMAT® TROPFEN - WIRKSAM UND GUT VERTRÄGLICH
The active ingredient in Silomat® Cough Suppressant Pentoxyverine Drops reduces the perception of the urge to cough. This allows the mucous membranes in the bronchi to recover. The effect begins after just 10-20 minutes and lasts for 4-6 hours. They are also ideal for taking before bedtime. Thanks to their good tolerability, the drops are suitable for children 2 years and older.

HÄUFIGE FRAGEN & ANTWORTEN

Does habituation occur after prolonged use of Silomat® Cough Suppressant Pentoxyverine Drops?
No. The drops do not contain codeine, which can lead to addiction with prolonged use. They also do not contain alcohol, which is especially important for children.

Can diabetics also take Silomat® Cough Suppressant Pentoxyverine Drops?
Yes, since the drops are sugar-free, they do not need to be included in a diabetic diet.

Contraindications

This product should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to any of the above ingredients, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or in children under 2 years of age. This product should not be taken together with other medications that can cause cardiac arrhythmias by altering cardiac conduction (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin, sotalol, terfenadine, amiodarone, moxifloxacin).

Dosage

Recommended use Silomat Cough Suppressant Pentoxyverine 19 mg/ml (Pack size: 30 ml):

Silomat® Pentoxyverine drops for tickly coughs should only be used for dry, non-phlegm coughs. Adults take approximately 30-50 drops several times a day. For children, the dosage is based on weight, according to the enclosed table. The drops can be diluted with water or taken undiluted.

Coughing serves to clear the airways. If mucus is brought up, this is a good sign. Mucus contains harmful bacteria, which the body rids itself of in this way. This type of cough should not be suppressed. Unlike a tickly cough, where no sputum is produced, this unnecessarily strains the respiratory tract.

EIN PAAR TIPPS GEGEN REIZHUSTEN
As long as you suffer from a tickly cough, you should avoid drinking alcohol. It further dries out the mucous membranes in the throat, which increases the irritation. Dry air from heating has the same effect – therefore, humidifiers or inhalations can also have a soothing effect.

• Warnings and precautions
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking pentoxyverine.
  • Particular caution is required when taking pentoxyverine in the following cases:
    • if the cough is associated with significant mucus production or if you suffer from asthmatic cough, as cough suppression is not advisable under these circumstances. In this case, only take pentoxyverine after consulting your doctor.
    • in patients with impaired renal function (renal insufficiency) and in elderly patients, as there are insufficient data on the use of this medicine for these patient groups,
    • if you suffer from glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure),
    • if you suffer from a benign enlargement of the prostate gland (prostatic hyperplasia).
    • If the cough persists for more than 2 weeks, the cause of your condition must be thoroughly determined by your doctor.
  • Children
    • Pentoxyverine should not be used in children under 2 years of age.
    • In isolated cases, seizures and reduced respiratory activity have been observed, particularly in young children. Therefore, young children must be monitored particularly carefully after taking pentoxyverine.

 

• Ability to drive and use machines
  • This medicine may occasionally cause drowsiness, even when used as directed. Since drowsiness may alter reaction time, there is a possibility that the ability to drive or operate machinery may be impaired.

Pregnancy

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
• Pentoxyverine should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as it has not been adequately studied for this period.
• Breast-feeding
  • The active ingredient pentoxyverine passes into breast milk.
