The trace element selenium acts as a cofactor for various selenoproteins and is involved in a large number of metabolic reactions. As a component of the active center of selenoproteins is selenium Among other things, it is necessary for the function of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase⁶. Selenium sits in the central position of the enzyme molecule and plays a central role in the elimination of cell-damaging compounds.
