Field of use

• The active ingredient of the drug belongs to a group of drugs called "proton pump inhibitors". These work by reducing the amount of acid that produces your stomach.
• The medicine is used to treat the following diseases:
• In adults:
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease" (Gerd). Here acid gets out of the stomach into the esophagus (the connection between throat and stomach), which causes pain, inflammation and heartburn.
  • Upper ulcers in the upper digestive tract (duodenum ulcer) or in the stomach (stomach ulcer).
  • Urbanity that is infected with a bacterium that is referred to as the "Helicobacter pylori". If you have this disease, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and to cure the ulcer.
  • Ulcers caused by medicines that are referred to as NSAars (non-steroidal anti-rheumatics). If you take NSAars, the medicine can also be used to prevent ulcers.
  • too much acid in the stomach caused by a tumor in the pancreas (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).
• With children:
  • Children older than 1 year and >/= 10 kg
    • gastroesophageal reflux disease" (Gerd). Here acid gets out of the stomach into the esophagus (the connection between throat and stomach), which causes pain, inflammation and heartburn. In children, the backflow of stomach contents (regurgitation), vomiting and poor weight gain can also occur as complaints.
  • Children and adolescents older than 4 years
    • Urbanity that is infected with a bacterium that is referred to as the "Helicobacter pylori". If your child has this disease, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and to cure the ulcer.

Contradictions

• The medicine must not be taken
  • if you are allergic (hypersensitive) against omeprazole or one of the other components of the drug
  • if you are allergic to medicinal products that contain other proton pump inhibitors (e.g. pantoprazole, lansoprazole, ravenprazole, esomeprazole)
  • if you take a medicine that contains Nelfinavir (applied in the event of a HIV infection).
• If you are not sure, speak to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist before use.

dosage

• Always take the medicine exactly according to the doctor's instruction. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not quite sure.
• Your doctor tells you how many capsules and how long you should take. This depends on your illness and age.
• The usual doses are given below.
• Adult:
  • To the Treatment of the complaints of Gerd such as heartburn and acid return:
    • If your doctor has noticed that your esophagus is slightly damaged, the usual dose 20 mg is once a day over a period of 4 - 8 weeks. Your doctor may prescribe a dose of 40 mg for another 8 weeks if your esophagus has not yet healed.
    • As soon as the esophagus has healed, the usual dose is 10 mg a day.
    • If your esophagus is not damaged, the usual dose is 10 mg once a day.
  • For the treatment of ulcers in the upper digestive tract (duodenum ulcer):
    • The usual dose is 20 mg once a day for 2 weeks. Your doctor may prescribe the same dose for 2 more weeks if your ulcer has not yet healed.
    • If the ulcer does not heal completely, the dose can be increased to 40 mg once a day for 4 weeks.
  • To treat ulcers in the stomach (stomach ulcer):
    • The usual dose is 20 mg once a day for 4 weeks. Your doctor may prescribe the same dose for 4 more weeks if your ulcer has not yet healed.
    • If the ulcer does not heal completely, the dose can be increased to 40 mg once a day for 8 weeks.
  • To prevent a re-occurrence of duodenum and stomach ulcers:
    • The usual dose is 10 mg or 20 mg once a day.
    • Your doctor can increase the dose to 40 mg once a day.
  • To treat duodenum and stomach ulcers caused by NSAars (non-steroidal anti-rheumatics):
    • The usual dose is 20 mg once a day for 4 to 8 weeks.
  • For prevention against duodenum and stomach ulcers if they take NSAars:
    • The usual dose is 20 mg once a day.
  • To treat ulcers caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori and to prevent another occurrence:
    • The usual dose is 20 mg of omeprazole twice a day for a week.
    • Your doctor will also tell you that you should take two of the following antibiotics: Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin and Metrronidazole.
  • To treat gastric acid surplus, caused by a tumor in the pancreas (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome):
    • The usual dose is 60 mg daily.
    • Your doctor will adapt the dose according to your needs and also decides how long you have to take the medicine.
• Children:
  • To treat Gerd's symptoms such as heartburn and acid return:
    • Children older than 1 year and with a body weight of more than 10 kg can take the medicine. The dose for children depends on the weight of the child and the doctor decides on the right dose.
  • To treat ulcers caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori and to prevent another occurrence:
    • Children older than 4 years can take the medicine. The dose for children depends on the weight of the child and the doctor decides on the right dose.
    • Your doctor will also prescribe the two antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin for your child.

 

• If you have taken a larger amount than you should
  • If you have taken a larger amount than prescribed by your doctor, speak to your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

 

• If you have forgotten the intake
  • If you have forgotten taking a dose, take it as soon as you think about it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, leave out the forgotten dose. Do not take the double dose to compensate for the forgotten dose.

Taking

• It is recommended that you take your capsules in the morning.
• You can take your capsules with food or on an empty stomach.
• Swallow your capsules as a whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the capsules because they contain excessive pellets that prevent the medicine from being broken down by the acid in the stomach. It is important that the pellets are not damaged.
• What to do if you or your child have difficulty swallowing the capsules
  • If you or your child have difficulty swallowing the capsules:
    • Open the capsule and swallow the contents immediately with a half glass of water or add the contents to a glass with still (non -bubbling) water, an acidic fruit juice (e.g. apple, orange or pineapple) or apple sauce.
    • Always stir the mixture immediately before drinking (the mixture is not clear).
    • Then drink the liquid immediately or within 30 minutes.
    • To ensure that you have fully taken the medicine, rinse the glass carefully with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid particles contain the medicine - they must not be chewed or crushed.

Patient information

• Particular caution when taking the drug is required
  • The medicine can cover the signs of other diseases. Therefore, speak to your doctor immediately if one of the following information applies to you before or while taking the drug:
    • For no apparent reason you lose much weight and have problems swallowing
    • You get abdominal pain or digestive disorders
    • They vomit food or blood
    • They outshine black stool (blood in the feces)
    • They suffer from severe or continuous diarrhea, since Omeprazole is associated with a low increase in infectious diarrhea
    • They have severe liver problems.
  • If you take the medicine on a long-term basis (longer than 1 year) your doctor may be able to monitor you regularly. Every time you see your doctor, you should report on any new and unexpected complaints and circumstances.
  • If you use the medicine for more than three months, it is possible that the magnesium content in your blood will drop. Low magnesium values can manifest themselves as exhaustion, involuntary muscle contractions, confusion, cramps, dizziness and increased heart rate. If one of these symptoms occurs with you, inform your doctor immediately. Low magnesium values can also lead to a lowering of potassium and calcium values in the blood. Your doctor may carry out regular blood tests to control your magnesium values.
  • Taking proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole can easily increase your risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures, especially if these are taken over a period of more than a year. Find your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you take corticosteroids (these can increase the risk of osteoporosis).

 

• Wateriness and ability to operate machines
  • It is unlikely that the medicine will affect its ability to drive cars or use tools or machines. Side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances can occur. You shouldn't drive a car or operate machines if they are affected.

Pregnancy

• Pregnancy
  • Inform your doctor before taking the medicine when you are pregnant or try to get pregnant. Your doctor will decide whether you can take the medicine during this time.
• Breastfeeding
  • Your doctor will decide whether you can take the medicine if you breastfeed.
