The African black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia) contains the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is considered the "happiness hormone" and is converted in our body into the "sleep hormone" melatonin. Our body uses sleep as a rest period to recharge its batteries and regenerate its physical and mental strength. Stress, worries, and anxieties, as well as an age-related decline in melatonin production, can make it difficult to drift off to dreamland.
