Lemon balm (Latin: Melissa officinalis) enjoys worldwide renown. Botanically, it belongs to the mint family and is native to the eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia. It has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. It is an aromatic, perennial herb that grows up to 90 cm tall and is also popularly known as bee herb, women's balm, or heart's comfort. Crushing fresh leaves between the fingers produces a lemon-like scent, which is why lemon balm is also called "lemon balm." It blooms from June to August with inconspicuous, small, bluish-white or pale yellowish-white flowers. Lemon balm has a long tradition of use: It was already valued in monasteries in the early Middle Ages, and Hildegard von Bingen also used it in her herb garden.
