Melatonin is a hormone that is primarily produced by the brain in the pineal gland. The body makes it from serotonin, the synthesis being inhibited by light. Only when it gets dark during the night does the melatonin concentration rise to twelvefold. This applies to young people, with older people the concentration often only increases by a factor of three. The maximum is reached around 3 a.m., after which the concentration drops again.
