Field of use

The drug is used for symptomatic treatment of diarrhea, provided that no causal therapy is available. A long -term application requires medical observation.

Contradictions

The medicine must not be taken
- if you are hypersensitive (allergic) against the active ingredient Loperamide hydrochloride or one of the other components of the drug.
- in the case of conditions in which the intestinal activity has to be slowed down, e.g.
- from children up to 8 years.

dosage

Always take the medicine exactly according to the doctor's instruction. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not quite sure.

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is
Adult
For acute diarrhea:
At the beginning of the treatment 2 hard capsules (corresponding to 4 mg loperamide hydrochloride) and then 1 hard capsule (corresponding to 2 mg loperamide hydrochloride) after each unshaped stool).
A daily dose of 8 hard capsules (corresponding to 16 mg loperamide hydrochloride) should not be exceeded.
In chronic diarrhea:
2 Hard capsules (corresponding to 4 mg loperamide hydrochloride) daily.
Children over 8 years
For acute diarrhea:
At the beginning of the treatment and after each unshaped chair 1 hard capsule (corresponding to 2 mg loperamide hydrochloride).
A daily dose of 4 hard capsules (corresponding to 8 mg loperamide hydrochloride) should not be exceeded.
In chronic diarrhea:
1 Hard capsule (corresponding to 2 mg loperamide hydrochloride) daily.
In children between 2 and 8 years old, the recommended dosage is 0.04 mg Loperamide hydrochloride per kg body weight daily. Other forms of dosage are available for this
If the diarrhea continues to exist 48 hours after the start of treatment, the medicine should not be taken further and a doctor is consulted.
The medicine should not be used for more than 4 weeks without medical supervision.
Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak.
If you have taken a larger amount of the drug than you should
The signs of overdosing loperamide are constipation, intestinal obstruction and symptoms of the central nervous system (neurotoxicity), such as cramps, lack of participation (apathy), sleepiness (somnolence), increased and involuntary muscle movements (choreoathetosis), disruption of the coordination of movement sequences (ataxia) or reduction Breathing (respiratory depression).
A doctor must definitely be visited when signing an overdose. The treatment depends on the overdose symptoms and the clinical picture. Under medical observation, the opioid antagonist naloxone can be used as an antidote.

Note for the doctor:
Since Loperamide has a longer duration of action than naloxone, the repeated administration of naloxone can be displayed. The patient should therefore be monitored closely for at least 48 hours in order to recognize a possible (re) occurrence of overdose symptoms.
In order to remove existing residues of active ingredients in the stomach, a gastric rinse may be carried out.

Taking

The hard capsules should be taken with some liquid.

Patient information

The medicine should not be used at
- Diarrhea that go hand in hand with fever and/or bloody stool.
- an acute thrust of ulcerative colitis (ulcerous colon infection).
- Diarrhea occurring during or after taking antibiotics (pseudomembranous [Antibiotika-assoziierte] colitis).
The following describes when you can only take the medicine under certain conditions and only with special caution. Please ask your doctor. This also applies if this information has been on your own.
The medicine may only be taken after consultation with the doctor if a liver disease exists or has been through because the reduction of Loperamide can be delayed in serious liver diseases.
In the event of diarrhea, large fluid and salt loss can occur. Therefore, the most important treatment measure in the event of diarrhea must be paid to replacement of liquid and electrolytes. This applies in particular to children.
Children
Children under 2 years of age must not be treated with medicinal products containing Loperamide.
In children between 2 and 8 years old, the dosage must be calculated according to the body weight.
Due to the high active ingredient content, this medicine is not suitable for this age group. Other forms of dosage are available for this. Reducers for children.
You can no longer use the medicine after the specified expiry date.

Pregnancy

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using all drugs.
Since there is no experience with pregnant women and the active ingredient goes into breast milk, an application during pregnancy and lactation should not be carried out.
