- Informations for the doctor:
- Signs of an overdose include constipation, urinary retention, intestinal obstruction and symptoms of intoxication of the central nervous system (neurotoxicity) such as convulsions, lethargy (apathy), sleepiness (somnolence), increased and involuntary muscle movements (choreoathetosis), disruption of the coordination of movement sequences (ataxia) or reduction of the Breathing (respiratory depression).
- Treatment depends on the overdose symptoms and the clinical picture.
- The opioid antagonist naloxone can be used as an antidote under medical supervision. Because loperamide has a longer duration of action than naloxone, repeated administration of naloxone may be indicated. The patient should therefore be closely monitored for at least 48 hours to detect any possible (re)occurrence of overdose symptoms.
- In order to remove any remaining active ingredients in the stomach, gastric lavage may be performed.
- If you forget to take it
- Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.
- If you have any further questions about using the medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Intake
- Please take the tablets whole with sufficient liquid (preferably a glass of water).
Patient information
- What should be taken into account for children?
- Children under 2 years of age must not be given medicines containing loperamide, such as: B. this medicine can be treated.
- Children between the ages of 2 and 12 may only be treated with medicines containing loperamide as prescribed by a doctor. Due to the high active ingredient content, the preparation is not suitable for this age group. Other dosage forms are available for this as prescribed by a doctor.
- Take special care when taking:
- if you have AIDS and are taking the medicine to treat diarrhea. You should stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor at the first sign of abdominal distention. There are individual reports of severe inflammatory expansion of the colon (toxic megacolon) in AIDS patients. They suffered from infectious colon inflammation (colitis) caused by viral and bacterial pathogens and were treated with loperamide.
- if you have liver disease, consult your doctor before taking.
- The medicine may only be used as prescribed by a doctor if you have or have had liver disease, because the breakdown of loperamide can be delayed in severe liver diseases.
- make sure you replace fluids and salts (electrolytes) adequately. This is the most important treatment measure for diarrhea, as it can lead to large losses of fluid and salt. This is especially true for children.
- The medicine stops the diarrhea but does not correct the cause. If possible, the cause should also be treated. Therefore, talk to your doctor.
- The recommended dosage and duration of use of 2 days must not be exceeded because severe constipation can occur.
- If diarrhea persists after 2 days of treatment, the medicine must be stopped and a doctor consulted.
- Ability to drive and use machines:
- Tiredness, dizziness and sleepiness may occur if you have diarrhea or as a result of taking the medicine. Therefore, caution is advised when driving or working with machines.
Pregnancy
- Before taking/using any medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
- Pregnancy:
- Even if no clear evidence of a teratogenic effect was found in a limited number of women (approximately 800) who took the active ingredient of the drug during pregnancy, you should not use the drug during pregnancy.
- Lactation
- Since small amounts of the active ingredient can pass into breast milk, you should not use the medicine while breastfeeding.
