How does the ingredient of the medicine work?

The active ingredient helps with allergies and calms the itching. It suppresses the effects of the body's own substance histamine and prostaglandins in two ways: First, it inhibits the release of substances from the mast cells (special defense cells) in the blood and tissue; secondly, it displaces the substances from their binding sites. As tissue hormones and messenger substances, histamine and prostaglandins play an important role in the development of inflammation and allergic reactions.

Many people suffer from allergies. With an allergy, the immune system mistakes harmless things such as plant pollen, food, pet dander, or insect venom for dangerous invaders. The immune system reacts to this by releasing histamine, a messenger substance that triggers an alarm reaction. This leads to symptoms such as itching and burning in the area of the eyes and nasal mucous membranes as well as sneezing - or also to various skin reactions such as swelling, redness and itching - up to severe circulatory problems. While most allergies are more of a nuisance than dangerous, they should be taken seriously. Because a harmless hay fever can also become a much more dangerous allergic asthma. Antihistamines cannot do anything against the allergy as such. LEVOCETIRIZIN AL can relieve nose and eye problems that occur with allergic rhinitis and symptoms of chronic hives such as itching.

Low dosage¹
Levocetirizine is a molecular variant of the proven antihistamine cetirizine, which is available as a racemate, consisting of right- or levorotatory isomers in approximately equal proportions. The two mirror-image forms act very differently: only the (R)-isomer is pharmacologically active. Levocetirizine is this potent (R)-variant molecule (enantiomer) of cetirizine. The H1-receptor affinity of levocetirizine is twice that of cetirizine. Therefore, half the dose of levocetirizine compared to cetirizine is required to achieve a comparable antiallergic effect. Levocetirizine can be used in children as young as 6 years of age.

APPLICATION RECOMMENDATION:
Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, adults and children from the age of 6 years take one LEVOCETIRIZIN AL 5 mg film-coated tablet per day whole for the period of symptoms for the relief of nasal and eye symptoms in seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and for the relief of chronic hives with a glass of liquid. If the impression arises that LEVOCETIRIZIN AL 5 mg film-coated tablets are too weak or too strong, a doctor should be consulted. If an allergy skin test is to be performed, LEVOCETIRIZIN AL 5 mg film-coated tablets must be discontinued three days before the test is performed.
