The medicinal mushroom Cordyceps sinensis belongs to the type species pupae. The mushroom resembles a club in appearance, to which the type species also refers. The body of the caterpillar thus becomes the host of the fungus, which continues to spread and completely invades the caterpillar with its mycelium. After growing through, the host caterpillar looks like a mushroom growing out of the ground.

I have long been very impressed by the promising effects of the Cordyceps mushroom. However, this type of mushroom is usually not vegan. The Cordyceps capsules from Green Naturals source this mushroom from special breeding cultures that are completely vegan. This means that no caterpillar has to die and I can still benefit from the positive benefits of the valuable fungus.
