Appl.: Carrier solution for compatible electrolyte concentrates and medications, supply of free water.

Contraindications: insulin-refractory hyperglycemia requiring use of more than 6 units of insulin/hour; hypokalemia, without concomitant electrolyte substitution; Metabolic acidosis, especially with reduced perfusion and insufficient oxygen supply. Other contraindications may result from the fluid intake associated with glucose intake. These include states of hyperhydration and hypotonic dehydration. Caution with increased serum osmolarity, especially when using highly concentrated solutions and fast infusion rates. Adverse: Frequency not known: Hospital-acquired hyponatraemia, hyponatraemic encephalopathy.
