Field of use

• The medicine is a vitamin.
• The medicine is used in the event of a lack of folic acid, which cannot be remedied dietetically.

Contradictions

• The medicine must not be taken,
  • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) against folic acid or one of the other components of the medicine.
  • The increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Due to the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, anemia must be ensured before the therapy of anemia due to disturbed development of red blood cells (megaloblast anemia) that the SE is not based on a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of a megaloblast anemia must be clarified before the start of therapy.

dosage

• Always take the medicine exactly according to the doctor's instruction.
• Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not quite sure.
  • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is
    • Depending on the need, 1 to 3 tablets per day (corresponding to 5 - 15 mg folic acid).
    • During pregnancy, the maximum daily dose is 5 mg.

 

• Duration of the application
  • The duration of the treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid lack and depends on the clinical image and, if necessary, based on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurement variables and is determined by the doctor for each patient.
  • In pregnancy, higher doses than 5 mg should be avoided daily.

 

• If you have taken a larger amount of the medicine than you should
  • If the higher dosage occasionally, no overdose symptoms can be expected.
  • In patients with seizures, however, there may be an increase in willingness to seize.
  • With high doses (over 15 mg per day and longer than 4 weeks), gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disorders, excitement or depression can occur. In these cases you should contact your doctor.

• The tablets are taken with some liquid for meals.

• Particular caution when taking the medicine is required
  • Even in the event of life-threatening megaloblast anemia, a possible vitamin B12 deficiency must be excluded due to the risk of permanent damage to the nervous system before the start of therapy (securing serum and erythrocyte samples and determination of the vitamin B12 content).
  • There are no sufficient experiences about the use of a daily dose of more than 5 mg folic acid in pregnancy, so the maximum daily dose of 5 mg folic acid should not be exceeded.
