Curcuma longa belongs to the ginger family and is also known as turmeric. The plant is native to Southeast Asia and India. There, it is cultivated and processed into spices and curry mixtures, often in combination with pepper. It is a defining feature of Indian cuisine. Traditionally, turmeric has long been used as a food in Ayurveda – for example, as an ingredient in "golden milk.

Similar to ginger, turmeric has tuberous, yellow-orange, underground rhizomes. These contain essential oils and fat-soluble, secondary plant substances such as curcumin, a natural yellow pigment. After harvesting, the rhizomes are dried and ground into powder. The resulting extract contains a high proportion of curcuminoids, the biologically active components of the turmeric plant.
