How does the ingredient of the medicine work?

The active ingredient damages the outer shell, the so-called cell membrane of fungi. This shell thus loses some of its functions, cell components leak out and the cell can dissolve. Depending on the concentration of the active ingredient, the growth and reproduction of the fungi are inhibited or killed directly.

Field of use

Biofanal® Vaginal Tablets is a specific anti-yeast agent used to treat vaginal fungal infections. The vaginal tablets contain the active ingredient nystatin.

fungi as pathogens
The presence of fungi on human skin and mucous membranes is normal at first. Only with an excessive multiplication does a fungal infection occur. When it comes to vaginal thrush, one speaks of vulvovaginal candidiasis, derived from the most common pathogen, Candida albicans. Candida species are yeast fungi that are the cause of a number of infectious diseases.

The risk factors
Excessive multiplication of pathogens to the point of vaginal fungus is based on a disruption of the healthy vaginal flora. Factors that promote this can be hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, menopause or the pill, as well as a weakened immune system, therapy with antibiotics or corticosteroids, diseases such as diabetes mellitus, stress and excessive intimate hygiene.

Symptoms of vaginal thrush
A vaginal yeast infection is noticeable by itching and burning in the genital area. There is also redness and swelling here, and a yellowish-white, crumbly discharge can often be observed.

Vaginal thrush is unpleasant, but can be easily treated with antifungal agents, so-called antimycotics. In applied doses, their effect on the fungus is fungistatic, i.e. growth-inhibiting (clotrimazole) or fungistatic and additionally fungicidal, i.e. fungicidal (nystatin).

Mode of action

How does nystatin work?
Nystatin binds to ergosterols on the fungal cell membrane. This makes the membrane more permeable, i.e. more permeable for cell components, so that transport processes are disrupted. The growth of the fungus is inhibited (fungistatic effect) and the fungus dies (fungicidal effect).

The active substance is: 100,000 IU nystatin.
The other ingredients are: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate (Ph.Eur.), corn starch.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the ingredients, the product should not be taken.

How is Biofanal® used?
The vaginal tablets can optionally be used for 3-day short therapy or 6-day therapy. Two vaginal tablets are inserted deep into the vagina three days in a row or one vaginal tablet is inserted deep into the vagina for six days in a row in the evening before going to bed. Please wash your hands before use.

• Due to the active ingredient nystatin contained in the drug, yellowish discoloration of the underwear is possible. These can be removed with normal washing.
• Children:
  • Due to the high osmolarity of nystatin, its use in very underweight and immature preterm infants is not recommended.

  • There are no special precautions required.

Pregnancy

Also during pregnancy?
Nystatin does not cross the placenta. Due to its molecular size, the active substance is hardly absorbed and does not get into the systemic circulation. The good tolerability makes Biofanal® the drug of choice for vaginal thrush during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The application is safe and secure at all times.

What needs to be considered?
Hints:
Simultaneous treatment of the partner with Biofanal® ointment can be useful in order to avoid renewed infections.
Any yellowing of laundry caused by Biofanal® can be easily washed out.

Hygiene:
In the intimate area, clear water should be used for washing and, if necessary, a cleaning product that is appropriate for the vaginal environment.
Moisture from perspiration offers good conditions for the spread of fungi, so make sure you wear breathable underwear that can be washed at 60 °C.
It is important to always wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
