Folates have a function in cell division and contribute to normal blood formation and growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy. The uptake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from the mother contributes to normal eye and brain development in the fetus and in the breastfed infant. The positive effect occurs when in addition to that for adults recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids (i.e. 250 mg DHA and EPA) daily 200 mg DHA should be taken.
